Mills County Community Wildfire Protection Plan

The American Conservation Foundation is assisting Mills County, Texas, with the development of a Community Wildfire Protection Plan designed to address local wildfire concerns and support countywide preparedness. This effort is being shaped through coordination with county representatives, emergency response partners, landowners, and community stakeholders to better understand wildfire risk and identify practical priorities for mitigation.

The Mills County CWPP is currently being developed and has not yet been finalized or approved. As the planning process continues, public input, local knowledge, stakeholder review, and technical guidance will help inform the recommendations included in the final plan. The CWPP is being prepared with consideration of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 and applicable Texas A&M Forest Service planning guidance.

The goal of the Mills County CWPP is to support a safer and more fire-resilient county by identifying wildfire hazards, reducing risks to homes and property, and strengthening preparedness before wildfire events occur. Mills County’s rural communities, ranching and agricultural lands, grasslands, wooded draws, and dispersed development patterns make proactive wildfire planning an important tool for protecting people, infrastructure, natural resources, and working lands.

Through this planning effort, ACF is helping Mills County build a foundation for coordinated wildfire mitigation, public education, emergency preparedness, and future project planning. Once completed, the CWPP will serve as a locally informed guide to help county leaders, fire departments, landowners, emergency responders, and community partners advance long-term wildfire resilience across Mills County.
