San Saba County Community Wildfire Protection Plan

The American Conservation Foundation (ACF) is partnering with San Saba County, Texas, to develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) aimed at improving wildfire preparedness, identifying areas of concern, and establishing locally appropriate strategies for reducing wildfire risk. The planning process emphasizes collaboration among county leadership, volunteer fire departments, emergency management personnel, landowners, and residents to address wildfire challenges throughout the county.

The San Saba County CWPP is currently being developed and has not yet received final approval. The planning process will utilize the Texas A&M Forest Service's Texas Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (TxWRAP) to evaluate wildfire risk across the county, alongside input from the CWPP Working Group and local communities. These resources and collaborative efforts will help identify areas of concern, establish priorities, and develop recommendations that reflect San Saba County's specific wildfire risks and preparedness needs.

San Saba County's landscape presents distinct considerations for wildfire management, including extensive agricultural and ranching operations, open grasslands, oak-juniper woodlands, brush-covered uplands, and riparian areas associated with the Colorado and San Saba rivers. The distribution of rural residences, agricultural facilities, and small communities across this landscape highlights the importance of identifying wildfire exposure, improving access for emergency responders, and protecting both developed areas and working lands.

Upon completion, the San Saba County CWPP will serve as a resource for local agencies, emergency responders, and community members seeking to implement wildfire mitigation and preparedness initiatives. The plan will identify opportunities for vegetation management, defensible space improvements, public outreach, emergency response coordination, and other risk-reduction activities that support the long-term safety and resilience of San Saba County.
